“Music that cuts to the core of identity can become a powerful agent for change. Songs of protest and calls for action have been linked across time. Through this lens, composer/performers Gilda Lyons, voice, and Daron Hagen, piano, explore songs of change, praise, and protest and draw a through-line between them. ”
The Phoenix Concert Series in New York City joins with the Downtown Music at Grace concert series to present the Lyons / Hagen Duo in concert.
The Lyons / Hagen Duo team up for their annual concert pairing new, old, and unexpected works in a genre-bending exploration of popular music, concert music, opera, and song. This year's recital pairs passionate works associated with resistance and renewal, including Weill / Brecht's "Ballad of Sexual Dependancy," the "Marseilles," the "Internationale," "The People United Shall Never Be Defeated," "We Shall Overcome," "Imagine," new works by Lyons and Hagen, as well as another half-dozen songs by Copland, Blitzstein, Weir, and others.
