Chamber Music on the Fox performs Hagen’s score to “The Tramp” as part of the Elgin Film Festival in September 2017.

Wintergreen Music Festival Artistic Director Erin Freeman leads The Tramp Orchestra in the debut of a newly-commissioned 88-minute complete instrumental score to the classic 1920 Paramount silent film starring John Barrymore in an evening that also includes the debut of the fourth “Exquisite Corpse” film score composed by the Wintergreen Festival composers. The mountainside tent will smell of freshly-popped popcorn; candy and soft drinks are for sale. The overflow-crowds have made this event an audience favorite.

ABOUT THE FILM

The 1920 classic silent horror film was released by Paramount and entered the public domain a few years ago. It stars John Barrymore and Martha Mansfield and is based on the 1886 novella by Robert Louis Stevenson. The story is set in late Victorian London and portrays the tragic consequences of a doctor’s experiments in separating mankind’s good and evil traits.

ABOUT THE TRAMP ORCHESTRA

This is the fourth appearance of the Mighty Tramp Orchestra, which features strings, winds, keyboards, and percussion. To paraphrase Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, “though the orchestra be but little it is fierce.” Traditional pit orchestra and cutting-edge commercial scoring techniques are combined in what results as a plush-sounding score, a tour de force event for the festival’s professional players and their maestra. The name of the ensemble comes from their genesis premiering Hagen-penned scores for Chaplin’s films A Dog’s Life, The Tramp, and City Lights over a three year period.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

Daron begins his fifth season as co-chair of the Wintergreen Festival Composers Retreat. Set among the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, you’ll hear classical, jazz, pop, and Broadway, plus there are cooking classes, seminars, and concerts at neighborhood wineries, cideries, and breweries. Wintergreen Music (formerly known as Wintergreen Performing Arts) produces high-quality symphonic and chamber concerts in addition to music education and outreach programs to infuse the Blue Ridge Mountains and beyond with music year-round. More information here.
