Program Note
Commissioned by the Albany Symphony Orchestra as part of their Capital Heritage Commissioning Project, this solo work was inspired by William Pettet's visual artwork Untitled, a modern work held in the collection of the Empire State Art Collection. The painting, an abstract which resembles a blood-red evening sky, provoked thoughts of the Greek boy Icarus who, in flying too near the sun, caused his waxen wings to melt and collapse. The composition was premiered by clarinetist Susan Martula on 4 March 2007 in front of the painting.
