Overture to "The Andersonville Trial"

Band Commissioning Project

I was nine in 1970 when the PBS broadcast of the play changed my world forever with its dignified and passionate exploration of questions surrounding morality, obedience to authority, personal responsibility, and free will. In 1983 I composed an orchestral overture that combined three themes from an opera I was planning based on Saul Levitt's great Civil War play The Andersonville Trial. Although I didn't yet have the chops to take on the entire opera, I did manage to conduct the premiere before setting it aside until I was finally able to move forward with the opera. You can learn more about the piece here. You can listen to it by clicking the stream link below, and follow the score below.

I reacquainted myself over the past few weeks for the first time in two decades with the 8.5-minute-long overture by engraving it. While doing so, it has occured to me that it would make a terrific serious band piece. Before I move ahead with the opera, I'd like to spend more time with these ideas by creating a band version. (You can learn more about my other band works here.) That's why I'm now reaching out to the band world for subscribers willing to co-commission one.
